Barcelona are keen to strengthen their defence by 2026 and are considering targeting centre-backs from the Premier League, with interest in a Crystal Palace star
Barcelona are planning for a future without one of their veteran defenders, who may retire after the next season.
As both clubs explore options to improve their defence, their common interest could create a transfer tussle over a versatile, top-quality free agent who will soon see out his contract.
The centre-back in question is Marc Guehi, Crystal Palace captain and an England international.
Reports from AS state that Guehi intends to join either Real Madrid or Barcelona in 2026 and is keen to pursue a move once his contract in south London ends.
With the ability to play as a right-sided and left-sided centre-back, due to his comfort with both feet, Guehi meets the need, particularly at Barcelona, which must find a successor for one of their older defenders.
Of course, Guehi’s profile has only grown from last summer when they were both first spotted by the two La Liga clubs as well as other Premier League clubs, such as Chelsea and Newcastle.
A free transfer in 2026 would be a big deal for either club as Guehi will only be 25 years old at the time and would bring tremendous leadership qualities, composure, and knowledge of making the right defensive choices.
The Spanish clubs would likely be looking to use Guehi to help their changing defence.
Real Madrid would be looking to bring Guehi in to help build their defence for the future, while it would simply provide Barcelona with a defender to build their defence for the next decade.
Since both clubs tracked Guehi from 2024, there will likely be plenty of competition for Guehi’s signature leading up to the transfer, as the contract begins to expire.
Guehi is focused on Crystal Palace right now, but he has dreamt of a move to Spain.
