Barcelona is set to seal Nico Williams blockbuster transfer, with the Athletic Club star poised to join the Blaugrana ranks.

The 22-year-old Spaniard, who has always been a priority transfer for the Blaugrana, has also identified FC Barcelona as his top choice, thus giving the club an advantage over potential suitors Arsenal and Chelsea.

It has never been a matter of if, but rather when Nico Williams would sign with Barcelona, which not only gives the club a strong chance for a stellar signing but sets the tone for the club’s plans for the 2025/26 season.

Williams’ presented situation before moving to Barcelona relies on improved finances, specifically a resolved €40 million dispute with Libero Football Finance AG, which guaranteed compliance with La Liga’s 1:1 Financial Fair Play rule, according to journalist Gerard Romero via Carpetas Blaugranas.

Athletic Club, meanwhile, remains obstinate in demanding the €62 million release clause for Nico Williams, though Barcelona is in discussions to make a structured payment similar to Arsenal, like they did with Martin Zubimendi.

Athletic Club’s stance on payment, and President Joan Laporta discussing an “exciting signing” with club senators, has led to much speculation within the media, including sources already indicating Nico Williams as their player.

Williams, given his flair, dynamism, and distance running speed during games, is an ideal candidate to play the left winger position in Hansi Flick’s attacking style.

His recent experiences during Spain’s Euro 2024 campaign alongside fellow Barcelona players such as Lamine Yamal and Pedri are also creating some optimism on how quickly he can adapt if he joins the club.

Earlier tensions with Athletic Club, who are currently unwilling to negotiate with Barcelona over his transfer, are being overshadowed by Williams’ desire to wear the Blaugrana jersey.

Despite some club officials cautioning Williams to wait on signing with Barcelona until La Liga approves the working financials, optimism abounds within the Barcelona camp.

If this is completed, it would certainly be a show of intent from the football club, giving them the 2025/26 season to establish clear dominance locally and in Europe.
