Barcelona’s plans for life after Robert Lewandowski continue to dominate headlines as the club looks towards the future of its attack.

The Catalan giants have spent months assessing different options in the market, knowing that replacing one of the greatest goalscorers of his generation would never be a simple task.

While several names have been linked with a move to the Spotify Camp Nou, one target has consistently stood above the rest in the eyes of the club’s hierarchy.

At the same time, tensions have grown between Barcelona and one of their direct La Liga rivals as negotiations over a high-profile forward continue to attract attention across Spain.

The situation has become even more complicated after formal complaints, rejected offers and public comments from multiple parties involved in the saga.

Now, Barcelona president Joan Laporta has openly discussed the club’s pursuit of Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez following the inauguration of his new presidential term.

The Argentine international has been identified as Barcelona’s preferred option to lead the line in the post-Lewandowski era, although Atletico have remained firm in their stance that the player is not available for transfer.

Barcelona’s first proposal for the 26-year-old was rejected, while Atletico subsequently filed a complaint with FIFA regarding the Catalan club’s pursuit of the player.

Despite Atletico’s position, Julian Alvarez has publicly indicated that he would like to leave the Madrid side and pursue what he describes as a dream move.

Speaking to the media, Laporta confirmed that discussions have taken place directly with Atletico Madrid chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin and revealed that Barcelona have submitted another proposal.

“I’ve spoken personally with Atletico Madrid and made the situation clear. Deco made an offer for a certain amount for this player,” Laporta said, as relayed by Mundo Deportivo.

The Barcelona president also revealed that the club’s admiration for Alvarez stretches back to before his move to Atletico Madrid, insisting the player has long been interested in joining Barcelona.

“We know the player wants to come to Barça from some time, even before he was at City. We made this offer with all due respect to Atletico; they have my utmost respect, both Cerezo and Gil Marin,” said Laporta.

According to the Barcelona chief, Atletico’s refusal was not solely based on financial reasons.

“They had the offer and told us they weren’t planning to sell because they didn’t have an alternative, and I told them that if they did have an alternative, the offer stood firm.”

Laporta made it clear that Barcelona will not wait forever for a resolution, although the club remains committed to its pursuit.

“We will stand firm for as long as we deem necessary, but we won’t be at the mercy of what Atletico might decide on this matter.”

The president also attempted to cool tensions between the two clubs despite the ongoing dispute.

“They know our intentions, and if they want to proceed, we would be delighted. They have our utmost respect, and we have a good relationship both institutionally and personally.”

For now, Barcelona’s pursuit of Alvarez remains unresolved, but Laporta’s latest comments have confirmed that the Blaugrana are still actively pushing to bring their long-term target to the Spotify Camp Nou.
