Barcelona’s search for a long-term attacking solution could be edging closer to a breakthrough as one of their key targets moves towards the exit door at Atletico Madrid.
The Catalan club have been closely tracking developments for weeks, waiting for clear signals that a potential deal could become realistic in the summer window.
Atletico Madrid’s plans have now been disrupted by growing uncertainty around one of their most important forwards.
Julian Alvarez has been at the centre of increasing speculation after reports suggested internal discussions had already taken place over his future.
The situation has now escalated following the striker’s own public comments while on international duty with Argentina.
Julian Alvarez has now publicly indicated that he is open to leaving Atletico Madrid, delivering his clearest message yet that a summer transfer could be on the table, with Barcelona among the clubs monitoring the situation closely.
The forward spoke after Argentina’s 2-0 win over Austria at the World Cup, where he addressed his future in unusually direct terms amid growing transfer attention.
He did not hold back when discussing his next step, stating, “The best thing for everyone is a transfer. I want to fulfill my dream,” he commented on an Argentine television channel with broadcasting rights.
Alvarez expanded further on his situation, adding, “It’s not the time to talk about this, but I can’t hide either; I try to be an honest person. I spoke with people at Atlético Madrid, and I think a transfer is best for everyone.”
Barcelona have been following the striker’s situation for some time, believing a move would only become realistic once the player made his intentions public.
That moment now appears to have arrived, with Alvarez’s comments strengthening the Catalan club’s belief that a summer opportunity could open up.
The Spanish side see him as a key target in their long-term attacking planning, particularly given his versatility and proven record at the highest level.
It was reported that he has agreed a 5-year contract with Barcelona.
Julian Alvarez only joined Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2024 from Manchester City for €75 million, and has since become a central figure in their attack.
Real Madrid were previously reported to have tested Atletico’s resolve with a €150 million approach, which was rejected by the club.
Despite external interest, Atletico’s current position remains firm, although Alvarez’s own stance has now complicated the situation significantly.
Since arriving in Madrid, Alvarez has made 106 appearances, scoring 49 goals and providing 17 assists across all competitions.
His debut campaign produced 29 goals in 57 matches, while his second season saw a return of 20 goals in 49 appearances.
With Barcelona monitoring closely and the player now openly discussing a possible exit, the coming weeks could prove decisive in determining whether one of Europe’s most sought-after forwards becomes available this summer.
