Barcelona’s attention has quickly turned from international football back to the transfer market after a successful summer for many of the club’s stars.
With eight Barcelona players returning as World Cup winners following Spain’s triumph in New Jersey, sporting director Deco is once again focusing on how to fine-tune Hansi Flick’s squad before the new season gets underway.
Defensive reinforcements have naturally been discussed, although the club’s plans appear more complicated than simply signing another centre-back.
According to Fabrizio Romano via YouTube, Cristian Romero remains a player admired by Barcelona, but the Catalan giants will only move for the Tottenham defender if they first make space in their squad.
Rather than actively pushing for a new central defender, Barcelona are currently prioritising balance within the squad and will not pursue Romero unless one of their existing options departs.
The Argentine international is widely expected to leave Tottenham during this transfer window.
Inter Milan are continuing to work on a potential deal, with direct discussions between the Serie A club and Romero’s representatives expected as negotiations progress.
The World Cup-winning defender has consistently performed at the highest level in the Premier League and is recognised for his aggressive defensive style, composure in possession and ability to defend in high-intensity systems, qualities that align well with Flick’s football philosophy.
However, Barcelona’s current defensive depth has reduced the urgency to recruit.
The club already considers Pau Cubarsi and Eric Garcia untouchable heading into the new campaign, while Andreas Christensen has recently renewed his contract.
Meanwhile, Gerard Martin has established himself as a dependable option.
Although reports have also linked Barcelona with Aymeric Laporte, central defence is not currently viewed as one of the club’s highest priorities.
Instead, any move for Cristian Romero will depend entirely on whether Barcelona can first create room in the squad before returning to the negotiating table.
