Barcelona are still reeling from Nico Williams’ shock contract extension at Athletic Club, a move that blindsided club executives and forced a sharp rethink in their summer recruitment plans.

Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco had identified Williams as the perfect long-term fit for the left flank, only for the winger to commit to Bilbao until 2035.

That development has left Barca scrambling for alternatives, with time ticking down before pre-season fixtures begin.

The Blaugrana hierarchy have since revived talks for one of their long-standing targets, who has already shown strong interest in making the move to Catalonia.

Barcelona are now stepping up their pursuit of Luis Diaz, with fresh reports suggesting a new approach to Liverpool is imminent.

According to Fabrizio Romano via X, Luis Diaz is once again Barca’s “main target” for the left wing, despite the club’s awareness that negotiating with Liverpool will not be straightforward.

Their initial approach was rejected, but the Catalan giants are undeterred and prepared to return with an improved offer.

The Colombian international is said to be “clear” about his desire to join Barca and would even accept uncertainty regarding his registration due to the club’s ongoing financial juggling.

However, Diaz is not expected to make his position public just yet, out of respect for Liverpool as they continue to mourn the tragic death of Diogo Jota, who passed away in a car accident last week.

Diaz has reportedly told close contacts that he remains fully committed to joining Barcelona, having dreamt of playing at Camp Nou since childhood.

His strong relationship with Deco and admiration for Flick’s playing style have only added to the appeal.

Liverpool, meanwhile, may be open to a sale.

The Reds have already spent heavily this summer on Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, and Jeremie Frimpong, and may need to balance the books to stay compliant with Financial Fair Play.

While no deal is done, Barcelona’s renewed determination and Diaz’s own willingness could bring this blockbuster transfer closer to reality in the coming days.
