Barcelona’s summer transfer plans have taken an unexpected twist just hours before a huge European night, with one of their top attacking targets now looking increasingly out of reach.
The Catalan giants are preparing for a crucial UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash against Atletico Madrid at the Spotify Camp Nou, with tensions already building off the pitch before a ball has even been kicked.
As is tradition, board members from both clubs gathered earlier in the day for a pre-match lunch, but it quickly became more than just a formal meeting.
Transfer talk took centre stage.
Barcelona have been actively exploring attacking reinforcements ahead of the summer window, with uncertainty surrounding the futures of both Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres adding urgency to their plans.
The club’s hierarchy have identified Julian Alvarez as a key target, viewing the Argentine as a long-term solution in attack following his rise into one of Europe’s most complete forwards.
But Atletico Madrid have made their stance crystal clear.
Club president Enrique Cerezo was approached ahead of the meeting and asked about Alvarez’s future, and his response left little room for optimism from Barcelona’s side.
“Can you guarantee that you’ll still be alive at the end of the year?” he fired back when questioned about whether the striker would remain beyond next season.
The exchange didn’t end there.
After a journalist responded by pointing out that Alvarez has a contract with Atletico, just as he has one “with God,” Cerezo doubled down with a remark that underlined the club’s position.
“Well, imagine that I am God and I will decide when he has to leave.”
Behind the humour, the message was firm.
Atletico Madrid have no intention of selling Julian Alvarez, particularly not to a direct rival like Barcelona, and have repeatedly pointed to the player’s long-term contract as a key factor in their stance.
That resistance is now forcing Barcelona to reconsider their approach.
Despite their admiration for the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner, the growing difficulty of negotiating with Atletico, combined with the financial complexities involved, has cast serious doubt over whether a deal can be completed this summer.
Timing only adds to the tension.
With both sides set to meet on the pitch in a high-stakes Champions League encounter, the subplot surrounding Alvarez has injected extra edge into an already massive fixture.
