In September, Barcelona’s first-choice keeper, Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, ruptured his right patella tendon, an injury that seemed season ending.
As the injury was after the transfer window had closed, the Blaugrana contacted Wojciech Szczęsny, who has just retired.
The former Juventus and Arsenal shot-stopper decided to sign a one-year contract with the club to be Inaki Pena’s backup.
However, we are now more than halfway through the campaign and Hansi Flick has decided that Szczęsny is the undisputed number one.
Marc-Andre Ter Stegen to return soon
Despite playing well and being very reliable, the Polish keeper might have to relinquish his starting spot sooner than he might have been expecting.
Sport, via Managing Barca, have claimed that Ter Stegen could be set for a shocking return in April and that the club are optimistic about it.
Even though the German might be fit, Flick could decide not to risk him and continue playing Szczęsny, as so far, he has yet to put a foot wrong.
Regardless of what happens, Ter Stegen’s return is a massive boost and hopefully, he can get back to his best.
