After a difficult season riddled with injury woes, a key player for Barcelona is back and ready to establish his future with the club.
Missing out on over half of the season due to an Achilles tendon injury requiring surgery, followed by two muscular injuries, the defender is just now getting back on the pitch, as reported by Diario Sport.
His first match was back on April 30 in the UEFA Champions League semi-final against Inter Milan, where he played only 7 minutes as a sub.
Since then, he has gradually found his groove, playing a full 90 minutes against Real Valladolid and playing over 30 minutes in the Clasico against Real Madrid after coming on for Pau Cubarsi.
The defender in question is Andreas Christensen, the 29-year-old Danish centre-back whose contract expires on June 30, 2026.
Although there were reports of a potential exit in the summer to facilitate new signings, Christensen is clear that he wishes to remain with Barcelona.
Christensen wants to show his worth to Hansi Flick and plans on taking the opportunity to show this in the games left in the season.
Although Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez are now the starting options in central defence, Christensen is convinced he will be a good option and get solid minutes next season.
Being Martinez’s replacement, Christensen is now ready to take part in the upcoming derby against Espanyol, and perhaps Barcelona’s last two games against Villarreal and Athletic Club, if they have already wrapped up the La Liga title.
Christensen needs to take these last games and make his mark, and show he is a viable option going forward to improve the squad.
His desire to stay and help reflects his commitment to the Catalan giants, and a strong finish would give him a spot at the Catalonia club for the long run.
If he persists with this intent, Christensen is set to be a key member of its legacy.
