Barcelona issues an official statement addressing its future involvement in the European Super League project.

This move comes at a pivotal moment for European football, where ongoing reforms to the Champions League and improved relations with UEFA have shifted the landscape for top clubs like the Blaugrana.

President Joan Laporta’s leadership has navigated financial pressures and fan expectations, prioritising stability and competitiveness in all competitions.

In an official statement released on the club’s website, FC Barcelona announced that it has formally notified the European Super League Company and all involved clubs of its withdrawal from the project.

The terse declaration ends years of commitment to the Super League initiative, which Barcelona co-founded alongside Real Madrid and Juventus back in 2021.

Since the collapse of the original 12-team proposal amid widespread backlash, Barcelona remained one of the last holdouts, even as Juventus exited and A22 Sports Management pushed for revival.

This exit leaves Real Madrid as the sole major club still attached to the vision, potentially isolating Florentino Pérez’s ambitions.

The decision aligns with Barcelona’s recent thaw in relations with UEFA, including productive talks led by Laporta and Nasser Al-Khelaïfi of the European Club Association.

Satisfied with UEFA’s Champions League tweaks—expanded format, better financial distribution for big clubs—the Catalans see no need for an alternative competition.

Sources close to the club emphasise a desire for “pacification” in European football, avoiding further division while securing their spot in elite competitions.

However, questions linger over potential penalties; earlier reports hinted at a €300m exit fee, though the official statement makes no mention.

As Barcelona focuses on La Liga and Copa del Rey, this statement closes a turbulent chapter, redirecting energy towards sporting triumphs. Força Barça echoes louder than ever.
