Nico Williams was subject to heavy interest from Barcelona last summer after his impressive Euro 2024 campaign with Spain where he helped guide La Rojo to the trophy.
Unfortunately for the 22-year-old, he hasn’t carried over his electric form with the national team to this season with Athletic Club.
However, the winger is still a massive threat on the left flank and was set to be the main outlet for the Basque side when they face off against Barça in the Spanish Super Cup this Wednesday.
However, Athletic Club have released a statement which has cast doubt over Williams’ participation in the much-anticipated game.
As per the clubs official website: ‘Athletic Club forward Nico Williams has suffered a contusion in his left ankle and is currently awaiting further tests to determine the extent of the injury.’
This is potentially a massive blow to Los Leones and losing their star player just before a major semi-final could have a big impact on Ernesto Valverde’s tactics.
Hopefully, it is a minor injury for the 22-year-old which doesn’t keep him out for too long but there is no doubt this news comes as a boost for Barcelona’s hopes of making it to the Spanish Super Cup final.
