Referees in La Liga have come under pressure from clubs and fans alike in the past few weeks following a sequence of situations.

The most recent incident was the red card shown to Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham for dissent by José Luis Munuera Montero.

Despite the superstar justifying his statement, he was banned for two La Liga matches this week. José Luis Munuera Montero was cleared of the investigation.

Barcelona faced another controversy in today’s clash with Las Palmas, but the VAR cleared them.

Eric Garcia Talks on Penalty Controversy

During the heat of the second half, precisely in the 82nd minute, Barcelona looked to have conceded a penalty. After the official initially ruled against the appeal, he succumbed after pressure from the Las Palmas players.

After carefully looking at the VAR, referee Adrián Cordero Vega cancelled the penalty after seeing an offside in the buildup play.

Eric Garcia said:What we don’t understand is why they asked the referee to review the handball incident if they already knew it was an offside situation. The play should have stopped right there! But given what happened last week, we can understand why they do it.”

Eric continues: “I was certain it was offside. At the start, the ball even touched his hand. Later, when he took the shot, it hit my hand, but it was already on the ground. I believe the referee kept telling the players from the beginning that my hand was down.”

After the recent campaign by the referees, it remains to be seen if the officials can be given due respect despite their flaws and errors.
