The year 2025 has not been good news for Spanish referees following a sequence of controversies, with the latest being the Los Blancos midfielder’s straight red card in the 39th minute in the clash against Osasuna on Saturday.

The Spanish referees’ situation is complicated as Real Madrid released a memo highlighting their dissatisfaction over the official decision in the clash against Espanyol.

During this hot season for the referees, Diario AS has revealed that the Spanish Federation (RFEF) is considering sacking the current head of the referees’ committee, Medina Cantalejo, and replacing him with veteran referee Mateu Lopez.

In a tweet today, Diario AS revealed that ‘highly reliable federal sources have strongly claimed that the CTA needs a deep renovation, which saw candidates springing up for the role.

The other candidates for the position of Medina Cantalejo, who seems to be nearing the end of his tenure, aside from Mateu Lopez, are Gonzalez Vazquez (an official in the Primera División from 2001 to 2008) and Alonso Fernandez (a former linesman in the Primera División who has spent the past two years serving as the president of refereeing in Greece).

Will this appointment solve the numerous controversies in La Liga? The outcome of the situation remains to be seen.
