When former Juventus and Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny was brought in on a one-year deal, it seemed like a rushed decision.

Yes, Marc-Andre Ter Stegen had picked up a season-ending injury but the Polish keeper has recently just retired and was thought to be done with football.

Despite originally coming in as a backup to Inaki Pena, Szczęsny has now become Hansi Flick’s undisputed number-one choice in all competitions.

This was also an unpopular move amongst a lot of fans, however, Szczęsny has proven, most recently against Benfica, that he is on another level compared to Pena.

His positioning, leadership and experience has given him the edge over the Spaniard and unless something crazy happens, the 34-year-old will continue in between the sticks until Ter Stegen returns.

Barcelona to offer Wojciech Szczęsny an extension

With the Polish keeper’s contract ending at the end of the season, Luis Rojo has claimed that the club want to keep him around and have offered him a one-year extension.

Szczęsny recently spoke about how he and his family are very happy in Barcelona so remaining at the club is not off the table.

However, with Ter Stegen set to return next season, as well as the club’s interest in Espanyol’s Joan Garcia, he could drop down to a third-choice keeper.

If Szczęsny is happy to be a leader in the dressing room and emergency option then it is a great deal for all, especially when you consider he is only on €60k per week.
