Barcelona have several important decisions to make as they look to maintain their position among Europe’s leading clubs.
Hansi Flick has continued to reshape his squad since taking charge, with competition for places becoming increasingly important at the Catalan side.
The left-back position has traditionally been a key part of Barcelona’s attacking identity, with defenders expected to provide width and support their forwards.
Alejandro Balde appeared to be the long-term solution after emerging from La Masia and establishing himself in the first team.
His pace and ability to carry the ball forward made him a regular during the club’s recent successful campaigns.
However, the competition for places has become more complicated, leaving the young defender facing an uncertain future.
AS Roma keen on signing Barcelona defender
That situation has reportedly attracted interest from Italy, with AS Roma emerging as a potential destination for Balde when the January transfer window opens.
According to reports relayed by Esport3, Gian Piero Gasperini’s side are exploring the possibility of bringing the Barcelona defender to Serie A.
Roma are understood to be considering an initial loan until the end of the season, with an option to make the transfer permanent.
Balde’s reduced involvement under Flick has fuelled the speculation.
The 23-year-old has reportedly managed only around 100 minutes across four appearances this season, struggling to secure a regular place in the starting line-up.
That represents a significant change for a player who made 42 appearances in all competitions during the 2025/26 campaign, starting 31 matches.
He also recorded three assists, underlining the attacking qualities that made him such an important part of Barcelona’s plans.
The defender’s situation is particularly notable given his development at La Masia.
Having joined Barcelona’s academy at eight, Alejandro Balde progressed through the youth ranks before making his senior debut against Bayern Munich in September 2021.
He eventually displaced Jordi Alba as the club’s first-choice left-back and has since collected multiple domestic honours.
Barcelona, however, are reportedly unwilling to let him leave on a straightforward temporary deal.
The club are said to value Balde at a minimum of €40 million and would prefer a permanent sale.
If they agree to a loan, they are expected to demand a mandatory purchase clause rather than an optional one.
Manchester United and Chelsea have also been linked with the Spain international, meaning Roma could face competition if Barcelona decide to make him available.
Balde remains under contract until June 2028, giving the Catalans a strong position in any negotiations.
Whether Roma can meet Barcelona’s demands remains to be seen, but Balde’s lack of playing time has placed his future firmly in the spotlight ahead of January.
