A standout €45m defender from Liverpool is firmly wanted by Barcelona as the club considers a bold mid-season move.
The Catalan club’s sporting direction has made enhancing their right-flank dynamics a key tactical target, with manager Hansi Flick requesting a high-intensity full-back to diversify his squad options.
With the player reportedly struggling to adapt to tactical demands in the Premier League, Catalan executives sense a favorable opening to negotiate a transfer.
The high-profile full-back at the center of Spotify Camp Nou’s recruitment strategy as a €45m Liverpool defender wanted by Barcelona is Netherlands international Jeremie Frimpong, as reported by Fichajes.
The 25-year-old wing-back joined Anfield in July 2025 under a long-term deal running through 2030, but has found himself outside the primary tactical plans.
Eager for a fresh project where his attacking traits can shine, Frimpong has reportedly greenlit a potential move to Barcelona as negotiations gain momentum behind the scenes.
From a tactical perspective, Flick views the Dutch international as the ideal offensive counterpart to Jules Koundé.
While Koundé provides defensive solidity and structural balance, Frimpong’s explosive speed, direct overlap runs, and crossing ability would offer Barcelona vital width and depth down the right flank.
However, Liverpool have set a clear €45 million price tag to amortize his initial purchase, prompting Barcelona’s board to explore an initial loan deal with a mandatory buy clause to comfortably satisfy La Liga’s Financial Fair Play rules.
For Barcelona, securing Frimpong would address a long-standing desire for vertical pace in transitions, unlocking additional attacking combinations alongside Lamine Yamal.
While Chelsea are also monitoring the defender’s situation, the player’s preference for Catalonia gives Barcelona a distinct advantage in personal terms.
As the winter transfer window approaches, football fans will watch closely to see if Barcelona can reach a formal agreement with Liverpool to bring the Dutch star to La Liga.
