Barcelona’s search for Robert Lewandowski’s long-term successor has been one of the club’s biggest priorities throughout the summer transfer window.
While Julian Alvarez remains the dream target, the Catalan giants have continued to assess several younger forwards capable of leading the line for years to come.
One player who has consistently impressed the club’s recruitment team is Bournemouth star Eli Junior Kroupi, whose breakthrough campaign in the Premier League turned heads across Europe.
The France Under-21 international established himself as one of England’s brightest young attackers after enjoying an outstanding first full season on the south coast.
However, Barcelona’s plans have now been dealt an unexpected blow.
According to The Athletic, Eli Junior Kroupi has been ruled out for between three and four months after undergoing surgery on Wednesday to repair a fractured fifth metatarsal.
The injury occurred during Bournemouth’s pre-season training camp in Austria and is expected to keep the 20-year-old sidelined until late October or potentially November, depending on how his recovery progresses.
It is a frustrating setback for both the player and Bournemouth, especially after Kroupi emerged as one of the Premier League’s standout young forwards last season.
He finished the league campaign with 13 goals, including an impressive run of 5 strikes across the final 8 matches, helping establish himself as one of Europe’s most sought-after attacking prospects.
Those performances did not go unnoticed in Catalonia.
Barcelona have monitored Kroupi extensively and regard him as one of their preferred alternatives should a move for Atlético Madrid striker Julian Alvarez fail to materialise.
With speculation surrounding his future continuing to grow before the injury, the timing could hardly have been worse.
Although Barcelona’s interest is unlikely to disappear entirely, the setback complicates matters as the club continue evaluating their attacking options ahead of the future.
