Barcelona’s La Masia system has produced plenty of players who go on to make headlines across Europe, often long after they leave the club.

The Catalan academy remains one of the most influential talent factories in world football, with graduates frequently returning to the spotlight in unexpected ways.

In Spain, former Barca prospects are often followed closely by supporters, especially when their careers intersect with rival clubs or major transfers.

That connection between academy roots and senior football drama continues to spark strong reactions among Barcelona fans whenever old names reappear in the news cycle.

Recent comments from one well-known graduate have now reignited that emotional link, after a light-hearted interview turned into a talking point online.

The player involved is former La Masia left-back Marc Cucurella, who has once again found himself at the centre of attention after making a striking remark about his ties to Barcelona.

Marc Cucurella, now 27, was asked during an appearance on El Chiringuito whether he would prefer to wake up bald or have a Barcelona badge tattooed on his chest.

Without much hesitation, he responded, “I would rather go bald than get a Barça tattoo.”

The answer quickly circulated among fans, with many Barcelona supporters viewing the comment as a playful but pointed dig at his former club.

Cucurella, who came through Barcelona’s youth system before moving on to build his professional career elsewhere, has never shied away from discussing his roots at La Masia.

Reflecting on his move, he also revealed that there was no hostility from his Spain teammates who were previously linked to Barcelona, saying, “They made the typical jokes that now we would be enemies, but nothing, they were very happy for me.”

The defender’s comments add another chapter to his post-La Masia journey, where several academy graduates have gone on to carve out careers away from the Camp Nou spotlight.

While his words were delivered in a joking tone, they are likely to be remembered by supporters given the strong emotional connection Barcelona fans maintain with their former academy players.
