Southampton officially re-sign former Barcelona midfielder

Southampton have officially sealed a heartfelt homecoming by re-signing a former Barcelona player on a deal until the end of the season.

Having recorded just three wins alongside six draws and five losses so far, Southampton sit 19th in the league standings, highlighting the urgent need for stability and leadership on and off the pitch.

With only 15 goals scored and 20 conceded in 14 matches, the Saints have faced difficulties both in attack and defense, notably suffering from a poor home record and inconsistent performances that put pressure on the squad’s morale and ambitions.

It is against this backdrop of adversity that Southampton look to bolster their ranks and inject renewed experience and determination into the team as they navigate the pivotal second half of the campaign.

In a strategic move to arrest their slump, Southampton have officially re-signed former Barcelona midfielder Oriol Romeu, who returns to St Mary’s for a second spell on a contract until the end of the 2025/26 season, as per the official Southampton website.

The 34-year-old Romeu originally joined Southampton in 2015 and became a core figure, making 256 appearances during a successful seven-year stint which included the club’s best-ever Premier League finish in 2016 and key European qualifications.

After a period with Girona and a subsequent season at Barcelona, where he made 37 appearances, Romeu now brings a wealth of top-tier experience and leadership back to Southampton, qualities they desperately need as they battle to regain consistency and push for promotion.

Romeu expressed his excitement and gratitude upon returning to a club and city he calls home, eager to repay the support with professionalism and strong performances.
