Barcelona’s academy has produced no shortage of generational talents over the years, but few have rewritten the record books quite as consistently as one teenager currently doing so under Hansi Flick.
Lamine Yamal has spent the past two seasons collecting age-related milestones with almost routine regularity, and Saturday night’s trip to Sevilla added another to the list.
Barcelona fell behind early when Youssef Fofana headed Sevilla in front, before Raphinha restored parity just three minutes later and went on to complete his second hat-trick in four days as Barcelona came from behind to win 3-1.
Lamine Yamal played a central role throughout, having already forced a fine save from Odysseas Vlachodimos inside the opening ten minutes before the ball rebounded off the post.
His true influence became clear after the break, delivering the cross for Raphinha’s second before setting up the Brazilian’s third in the 69th minute to seal the win.
Those two assists took Yamal’s career tally to 51 in 159 official appearances for Barcelona, and made him the youngest player to reach 50 La Liga assists since Opta’s records began in the 2013/14 season, achieving the feat at 19 years and 68 days old.
The previous record belonged to Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior, who reached his 50th assist in May 2023 at 22 years and 298 days, meaning Yamal got there three years and 230 days earlier than his rival.
The milestone arrived despite Yamal being subjected to jeers and whistles from the home crowd throughout the match at the Sanchez-Pizjuan, a reception that appeared to do little to affect his performance.
His numbers this season alone are striking, eight goals and six assists in eight appearances, contributing significantly to Barcelona’s perfect start that has them sitting top of the table with 21 points from seven games.
Raphinha’s own form has been equally remarkable alongside him, with the Brazilian now Barcelona’s top La Liga scorer under Flick having overtaken Robert Lewandowski’s tally, and the pairing of the two is proving increasingly difficult for opposition defences to plan against.
Yamal has previously played down comparisons to Lionel Messi, but performances like Saturday’s, breaking a record that took a Ballon d’Or contender in Vinicius until his early twenties, continue to make the comparison harder to avoid.
Barcelona’s perfect record shows no signs of slowing, and with Yamal still just 19, this latest landmark may prove to be one of many still to come.
