Barcelona are entering a crucial phase of their summer planning, with several transfer targets under consideration as Hansi Flick looks to strengthen the squad.

The Catalans are particularly focused on reinforcing their defensive options, especially at full‑back, following their La Liga title success.

With Jules Kounde often utilised at right‑back, the club are in the market for a specialist.

The name repeatedly emerging is Vanderson.

Their pursuit is complicated by stiff competition from Tottenham Hotspur, who are equally intent on securing the Brazilian full‑back.

According to Brazilian outlet UOL Esporte, both Barcelona and Tottenham are actively hoping to conclude a deal in the summer window.

Barca, motivated by Flick’s desire for positional depth, value the deal at around €35 million – though a deal could be hindered by Spain’s higher tax regime, potentially reducing Monaco’s net return.

Tottenham, meanwhile, have already shown serious intent.

Reports suggest Spurs are prepared to spend heavily to bolster their defensive line after a turbulent 2024/25 campaign, where right‑back coverage became a concern.

They currently possess Pedro Porro and Djed Spence, but the sale of Emerson Royal has opened up space for Vanderson – and Spurs are said to be front‑runners in preliminary negotiations.

The Brazilian defender made the move from Gremio to Monaco in 2022.

Since then, he has amassed 123 appearances, scored eight goals and registered 14 assists, while also earning regular call-ups to the Brazilian national squad.

Both Barcelona and Tottenham recognise his potential to improve their respective squads – Barca in their quest for domestic dominance, Spurs as they rebuild and aim for European qualification.

This competition emphasises the strategic battle between Europe’s elite clubs in recruiting emerging talent.

For Barcelona, landing Vanderson would tick a key box in their defensive overhaul.

But they know Spurs are equally ambitious and have the readiness to match the fee.

The coming weeks will be key – with negotiations likely accelerated once Monaco’s valuation is finalised and competing clubs move to secure his signature.
