La Liga president Javier Tebas has cautioned FC Barcelona that signing players is only half the battle, as registration poses a major issue.
FC Barcelona’s plans for transfers are already in full swing as the club is looking to add two senior players as part of Hansi Flick’s squad for the 2025–26 season.
The club has made notable progress in the transfer market as they try to nail down a new goalkeeper and a winger as they continue to prepare them for their fight for honours.
Although they’ve made inroads into the transfer market already, La Liga president Javier Tebas highlighted a caveat to the club’s ambition, referring to the club’s ongoing financial issues, as reported by Mundo Deportivo.
Tebas stated while at the newly developed Esade Campus in Madrid, that “Barcelona can sign players, but registering these players under La Liga’s Financial Fair Play is another story with the club so far away from a 1:1 ratio.”
The targets are Espanyol’s goalkeeper Joan Garcia and Athletic Club’s winger Nico Williams.
Barcelona has already executed Garcia’s €26.34 million buyout clause, and La Liga has confirmed the deal, pending administrative work to finalize the registration.
Likewise, as noted above, Barcelona has already held an important meeting between its sporting director Deco and the player’s agent.
In that meeting, Deco expressed their willingness to trigger the clause between €58 and €62 million for Williams. Tebas emphasized, “It’s one thing to sign Joan Garcia officially and then register him,”.
“Barça have to do things… they know what they are.”
He expressed a lack of faith in Barcelona’s financial power for Williams, saying, “I don’t know if Barça has the money to buy Nico Williams,” emphasizing the need for shares or financial logistics.
Regardless, the recent upgrade in Barcelona’s finances by the bank gives some hope.
As FC Barcelona moves towards this, being able to register Garcia and Williams will be key to moving Flick’s vision for a new generation of players.
