FC Barcelona have a formidable and well-gelled starting eleven, with a talented core that promises long-term success.

However, one glaring weakness remains—depth, especially in key defensive positions.

This vulnerability was exposed in high-stakes matches such as their tie against Inter Milan, where both starting full-backs were unavailable.

It’s an issue that new boss Hansi Flick is reportedly keen to resolve swiftly.

The Catalan side found themselves short-handed at a crucial point in the campaign, struggling without their first-choice full-backs against Inter.

Strengthening that area is a clear priority for Flick as he begins to shape his squad.

According to Fichajes, Barcelona have identified 29-year-old Alejandro Grimaldo as a solution.

A product of La Masia, Alejandro Grimaldo left the club to build a strong career abroad, excelling at Benfica before joining Bayer Leverkusen on a free transfer.

Since arriving in Germany, he has become a key figure under Xabi Alonso, impressing with consistent performances on the left side of defence for two seasons.

The Spanish international may now be on the move again, with Leverkusen facing the potential departures of several key figures, including Wirtz, Frimpong, and Alonso.

Grimaldo has reportedly signalled a desire to return to Spain, and a reunion with his boyhood club could be on the cards.

Across 48 matches in all competitions this season, Grimaldo has netted four goals and provided 13 assists.

His adaptability is a major asset—he can slot in as a traditional left-back in a back four or operate as a wing-back in a more advanced role.

While Barcelona already boast one of the world’s top young left-backs in Alejandro Balde, his current understudy Gerard Martin lacks the same quality, leaving the club eager for an upgrade.

Bringing in Grimaldo would give Barca a reliable and experienced option who is already familiar with the club’s philosophy.

With his future at Leverkusen uncertain and a return to Spain potentially on the horizon, a summer switch could make perfect sense for both player and club.
