FC Barcelona saw the departures of Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets in quick succession.
All three having played crucial roles in the club’s success over the past decade.
Among them, Busquets’ exit left the most significant void, as the Catalans lacked a clear successor for the pivot role.
In response, Xavi opted to bring back Oriol Romeu from Girona, a former La Masia product who had impressed in La Liga.
Despite a promising start to his second spell at Barca, Oriol Romeu struggled to cope with the physical and tactical demands of top-level football in Catalonia.
His performances dipped, and following the arrival of Hansi Flick as manager, the club sanctioned a loan move back to Girona.
According to SPORT, Girona have now bid farewell to several players as the season ends, and Romeu was among those included in the list, suggesting he will return to Barcelona once again.
This doesn’t necessarily mean Girona have no interest in retaining the 33-year-old midfielder, but there is currently no agreement in place to make his stay permanent.

Meanwhile, Barcelona are not planning to keep him either, with his exit from the Camp Nou expected in the near future.
Romeu featured regularly under Michel this season, making 31 appearances across all competitions, though he wasn’t always a first-choice starter.
The midfielder could still negotiate a move back to Girona or explore alternative options.
With only a year left on his contract, Barcelona may choose to terminate his deal early to give the player freedom to choose his next destination.
Romeu’s return was a short-term fix that ultimately didn’t reignite his form, and the club now appears ready to move on.
The signing may be remembered as a low-risk gamble that didn’t pan out, but both parties are expected to part ways on respectful terms.
As Barcelona continue to reshape their midfield for the future, Romeu’s chapter at the club seems all but closed.
