A seasoned FC Barcelona defender is determined to secure his spot at the Camp Nou but remains open to a surprising transfer.
FC Barcelona’s constant search for ways to comply with the strict Financial Fair Play rules instituted by La Liga has placed several of its players on the gate, including one defender whose status has drawn specific scrutiny.
FC Barcelona needs to create space on its wage bill to bring in marquee signings such as Joan Garcia and Nico Williams, but they also need to create a list of players who could provide them funds.
While the defender in question would like to fight for his place in Hansi Flick’s team, he is not opposed to a switch to the Premier League or Serie A if the situation at the Camp Nou does not improve, which displays a pragmatic approach to his career.
The defender is Andreas Christensen, a 29-year-old Danish center-back whose contract with Barcelona runs until 2026.
According to Diario Sport, Christensen believes he can be just as competitive as with Pau Cubarsi, Inigo Martinez, and Ronald Araujo for a position in Flick’s rotation.
Christensen brings versatility and experience from his years with Chelsea and is a useful commodity for Barcelona.
He suffered through some injuries last season, notably Achilles tendon surgery, which limited his appearances to just four matches, but he did return for some really important matches vs. Inter Milan, Valladolid, Real Madrid, and Espanyol.
As Eric Garcia pressures Christensen for a defensive spot, it is looking less likely that he will play, which could impact his decision on whether or not to stay.
Barcelona’s financial plan seeks to move high-wage players, and Christensen can be moved for a low fee that will still relieve their wage burden.
There is interest from clubs in the Premier League, and even Juventus in Serie A, and in fact, Christensen is interested in returning to England in the future as he and his family feel comfortable there.
For now, he wants to prove his worth to Flick, although if someone like Araujo gets a massive bid, things could change.
Christensen’s future will be a pivotal part of Barcelona’s planning this summer.
