Barcelona is entering the new season with plans centered on bolstering their defense, targeting a standout Tottenham Hotspur player.
Hansi Flick requires additional options either in size or quality in the backline, especially at full-back, and in preparing to compete in multiple competitions.
The financial restrictions remain, while the club may take advantage of a tight market or set up for strategy, but the player in question and the price tag with other European teams in a similar financial predicament may be some hurdles to navigation.
The player in question is Pedro Porro, a full-back for Tottenham Hotspur and a 25-year-old Spaniard, who has scored four and assisted nine goals this season, as reported by Fichajes.
Porro can offer defensive and offensive work, which would suit Flick’s system, wherein Porro can rotate with Jules Kounde on his right or potentially cover the left flank as well.
Since his time at Sporting Lisbon where he developed, he has matured into an exciting talent, and with his impressive performances in the Premier League and media attention, Barcelona has clearly taken notice.
Nevertheless, getting Pedro Porro will not be simple.
Tottenham has set Porro’s minimum release clause at €60 million – a large number for Barcelona amid the financial constraints they are facing.
To solidify a deal, they are going to have to sell players or trim salaries, too.
Completing this transfer is going to be more difficult, considering Manchester City and Bayern Munich are also interested, and both clubs will afford what Tottenham wants.
For Barcelona, the time is very much against them, and they must act now to compete against their rivals for Porro’s signature.
His experience, energy, and versatility will provide a great addition to Flicks’ squad and could be a change-maker.
