Barcelona’s plans to strengthen their defence this summer have already hit a snag, with one of their fallback options slipping through their grasp.
Barcelona are prioritising the signing of a left-footed centre-back ahead of the new season, with Alessandro Bastoni firmly at the top of their wishlist.
However, with a deal for the Inter Milan star far from straightforward, the Catalan side had been assessing alternative options, one of which is now off the table.
Marcos Senesi, who was being monitored as a cost-effective solution, will not be making the move to Spain.
The defender, currently at Bournemouth, is set to become a free agent at the end of June and had been on Barcelona’s radar due to his consistent performances in the Premier League.
In fact, his profile aligned well with what the club were looking for, and he had even been offered to Barcelona on multiple occasions.
But hesitation from the Spanish giants appears to have cost them.
After waiting for a concrete move that never materialised, Marcos Senesi has now opted to remain in England, reaching a pre-agreement with Tottenham Hotspur, as reported by Florian Plettenberg.
The proposed deal would see him sign a three-year contract, although it is dependent on Spurs maintaining their Premier League status.
If they were to suffer relegation, alternative options, potentially in Italy, could come back into play.
From Barcelona’s perspective, this represents a missed opportunity to secure a proven defender without a transfer fee.
Senesi had emerged as a practical, low-cost reinforcement, particularly given the club’s ongoing financial constraints, but ultimately, other priorities took precedence.
Despite this setback, the focus remains unchanged.
Barcelona are continuing to push for Bastoni as their primary target, viewing him as the ideal long-term addition to their defensive line.
But this situation serves as a reminder of the risks involved in waiting.
In a competitive market, even backup plans don’t stay available for long, and Barcelona have now been forced to move on and reassess their options.
