Barcelona are continuing to keep a close eye on emerging talent across Europe, with the club looking beyond the more established names when assessing potential additions.
The Catalan giants have a long history of identifying players before they become household names, and their latest scouting trip in Sweden has attracted plenty of attention.
Their focus has reportedly turned towards Djurgarden, where one Norwegian midfielder has enjoyed a remarkable breakthrough campaign in the Allsvenskan.
Bo Hegland has transformed his fortunes since arriving in Sweden, going from a player who struggled for regular minutes to one of the league’s most productive attacking players.
The 22-year-old has also attracted interest from clubs elsewhere in Europe, with Newcastle United and Belgian side Anderlecht among those linked with him in recent months.
According to Expressen, Barcelona were in attendance at Djurgarden’s meeting with GAIS on Monday to scout Bo Hegland, and the midfielder gave them plenty to watch as he scored and assisted in a 2-0 victory.
Hegland created the opening goal for Kristian Lien before finding the net himself in the second half, taking his Allsvenskan tally to eight goals and 15 assists from 21 appearances.
His 15th assist also saw him draw level with the Allsvenskan record for assists in a single season, previously set by Magnus Wolff Eikrem in 2015.
That level of production helps explain why Barcelona have now sent representatives to watch him in person, although there is currently no indication that the Spanish club have made an offer or opened formal negotiations.
Hegland’s development has been particularly interesting because his career has taken a less conventional route towards the European spotlight.
The Norwegian came through at Frigg before spending time in the youth setup at Italian club Lecce, eventually joining Moss in 2023 and establishing himself in Norwegian football before making the move to Djurgården in the summer of 2025.
Djurgarden reportedly paid around €850,000 to bring him to Sweden, where he signed a contract running until the end of 2029.
His first period at the club was far less spectacular, with limited opportunities partly because Djurgarden had reached its foreign-player quota, but his fortunes changed dramatically during the current campaign.
Bo Hegland has now developed into an attacking midfielder capable of contributing both goals and assists, while his right-footed creativity has made him one of the standout performers in Sweden this season.
Anderlecht attempted to take advantage of his growing reputation during the summer, but Hegland rejected the opportunity and chose to remain with Djurgarden.
Hegland himself has explained that his decision was straightforward, with his focus remaining firmly on Djurgarden despite interest from elsewhere.
Newcastle have also been linked with the midfielder, while reports have indicated interest from clubs in France, meaning Barcelona are now entering a growing group of European sides monitoring his progress.
There is also a familiar connection between Barcelona and Djurgarden, with the Spanish giants previously showing strong interest in Lucas Bergvall before the Swedish midfielder eventually chose Tottenham.
For now, Barcelona’s presence at the 2-0 victory over GAIS should be viewed as a scouting development rather than evidence of an imminent transfer.
But with Hegland already matching the Allsvenskan assist record, turning down Anderlecht and attracting attention from Premier League clubs, his performances are clearly beginning to take him onto a much bigger stage.
