A top Saudi club is targeting a Barcelona defender with a lucrative salary offer, shaking up the transfer window.
FC Barcelona now has a difficult choice ahead of them with one of the team’s main defenders as they march on through the transfer window.
La Liga champions Barcelona have not yet extended a renewal offer to the player, whose contract expires in 2026.
Reasonably, several clubs are interested abroad, with Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr being serious contenders, potentially creating a deal worth significantly more than the player earned, and making squad planning more difficult for Barcelona.
According to Diario Sport, the defender in question is Andreas Christensen, the 29-year-old Danish international valued for his ability to play across positions.
Al-Nassr’s interest in Christensen was heightened after the club representatives recently visited Barcelona, focusing on central defenders.
The club is also prepared to double Christensen’s current salary, which will make him a very tempting proposition.
That said, Christensen is currently very much at Barcelona, and wants to see out his contract, believing that he can compete for a chance under coach Hansi Flick, who believes that Christensen can play both as a natural centre back and defensive midfielder.
With Iñigo Martínez and Pau Cubarsí filling in as their first-choice backs along with Ronald Araújo and Eric García, who has plans to renew, the situation is complicated.
Each player has versatility, and a number of emerging academy players are available, which complicates the decision to retain Christensen, especially given their lack of urgency to pursue acquiring any other targets like Jonathan Tah.
Despite Hansi Flick’s appreciation for Christensen’s contributions (in particular after his injury last year), Barcelona would gladly choose to move on from him so that they can thin their roster out and clear some financial burden.
