Barcelona have faced plenty of questions over their defensive options heading into the summer, with competition for places increasing under Hansi Flick.
The Catalan giants have several centre-back options available, while the club continues to assess how to structure the squad for the future.
One player whose situation has attracted attention is Ronald Araujo, with the Uruguay international repeatedly linked with a possible departure despite his importance to the team.
His future has been discussed during recent transfer windows, but his own stance appears to be much clearer than outside speculation suggests.
According to journalist Santi Ovalle, via X, Ronald Araujo has no desire to leave Barcelona and remains fully committed to the club.
The defender believes his future is still at Camp Nou and wants to complete the five-year contract extension he signed in January last year, which keeps him tied down until 2031.
The 27-year-old reportedly feels valued by Barcelona and sees himself as one of the leaders within the dressing room.
As one of the club captains, Araujo believes the trust shown by Barca is a major reason why he wants to continue fighting for his place rather than look for a new challenge.
However, the defender’s 2025/26 campaign was far from straightforward.
Araujo missed a period of action due to mental health issues before later finding regular minutes difficult to secure under Flick, with other defensive options moving ahead of him in the manager’s plans.
His difficult season was followed by further disappointment at international level, after an injury suffered shortly before the 2026 FIFA World Cup ruled him out of Uruguay’s matches.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side were eventually eliminated during the group stage after suffering defeat to Spain, meaning Araujo never had the opportunity to represent his country at the tournament.
Despite those setbacks, Araujo is preparing for his sixth season as a Barcelona first-team player and remains determined to compete.
The centre-back’s biggest challenge will be reclaiming a leading role, especially after Pau Cubarsi, Eric Garcia and even Gerard Martin were preferred ahead of him at points last season.
Barcelona’s defensive plans could become even more complicated, with Andreas Christensen agreeing a new contract and the club still open to adding another defender.
However, Araujo’s commitment suggests he is ready to fight for his place and prove why he has long been viewed as a future leader at the club.
