Transfer sagas rarely stay simple for long, and Folarin Balogun’s situation looks set to develop into a genuine multi-club scramble before the window shuts.
Barcelona’s interest in the Monaco striker emerged this week, with Hansi Flick’s side exploring alternative centre-forward options following the collapse of their pursuit of Julian Alvarez.
They are far from the only club paying attention, though, with Tottenham having tracked Balogun’s situation for some time now and Aston Villa also lurking in the background, as per SPORT.
Spurs’ interest is the most established of the three, with reports of their pursuit stretching back several weeks as they continue searching for attacking depth before deadline day.
Villa’s involvement carries an added layer of intrigue, with their next move likely to hinge on Ollie Watkins’ own future at Villa Park.
Should Watkins depart for Al Hilal, as has been reported in recent days, Villa are expected to accelerate their own search for a replacement, with Balogun firmly in that conversation.
That would leave three Premier League and European heavyweights all monitoring the same 25-year-old, at a moment when Monaco appear open to negotiating despite having no urgent need to sell.
Balogun’s stock has rarely been higher, following a season in which he scored 19 goals in 43 appearances for Monaco before carrying that form into a home World Cup with the United States.
He netted three goals in as many matches at the tournament, continuing a rise that began with a prolific loan spell at Reims and a €40million move to Monaco from Arsenal back in 2023.
With the forward under contract until 2028, Monaco hold a strong negotiating position regardless of how many suitors circle, and are unlikely to be rushed into accepting anything below their valuation.
That dynamic could ultimately decide where Balogun ends up, with financial muscle likely to matter as much as footballing project once serious negotiations begin.
Barcelona’s pull as one of European football’s biggest names remains obvious, but with Tottenham and potentially Villa both able to move faster and pay comparable fees, the destination for Monaco’s star forward is anything but decided.
With the September 1 deadline now bearing down fast, all three clubs may need to show their hand sooner rather than later.
