Barcelona are preparing for one of their toughest European nights in recent memory as they set their sights on St James’ Park this evening.
With the renovations at the iconic Spotify Camp Nou still ongoing, the Catalans have been forced to begin their UEFA Champions League campaign away from home.
That means a raucous Geordie atmosphere awaits, and Newcastle United’s ground is famously one of the most intimidating venues in English football.
Hansi Flick’s men know that a positive start is vital, especially after the weekend win over Valencia that boosted confidence in the squad.
Their travelling support will expect the same intensity and sharp attacking play that has seen Barcelona remain unbeaten in domestic competition so far.
Newcastle, meanwhile, will look to use the home crowd to unsettle the visitors.
The stakes could hardly be higher for both sides with group-stage points crucial in a tightly balanced section.
Barcelona will be without the comfort of their home pitch and must rely on their ability to adapt quickly to the relentless noise that is a trademark of St James’ Park.
Speaking to the media, and quoted by Mundo Deportivo, ahead of Newcastle United’s UEFA Champions League clash against Barcelona tonight, the Premier League team’s midfielder Bruno Guimaraes commented on the Catalans’ might and other related topics.
He began, however, by addressing the topic of links that existed between him and Barcelona and whether there was any weight to such reports.
“It was all just media talk; there were no direct negotiations. When I was young, I watched Barcelona because of Ronaldinho.
“I loved him, and then Iniesta and Xavi came along.”
“In Brazil, we follow La Liga a lot, and I’ve always admired Barcelona because of those players,” he added, making his admiration of Barcelona clear.
The star midfielder made his excitement clear ahead of tomorrow’s clash in the UCL.
“I am excited to face Barcelona, they are a team I have never faced before.
“I used to always watch their matches in my childhood.”
