Newcastle United have pulled off a massive coup after they agreed on terms with Barcelona’s target.
The 18-year-old sensation, who has been creating a stir in Spain with his performances, will be heading to the Premier League after Newcastle completed the transfer.
The news has been confirmed by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, with the official announcement from Newcastle United yet to follow.
The Spainyard enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2023/24, netting five goals and making six assists in 33 senior games.
His meteoric rise caught the attention of Europe’s big guns, and Barcelona and Real Madrid kept a close eye on his development.
Newcastle acted quickly, however, to secure the future of the young Spaniard, offering him a route to Premier League football.
According to reports, the player is Antonio Cordero.
More surprising about the move, however, is Cordero’s close ties to Barcelona through his agent, Pini Zahavi, who is close friends with Barça president Joan Laporta and even represents their manager, Hansi Flick.
These ties aside, Newcastle’s project was too alluring for the Spanish U-19 international.
Barcelona also tried to sign Cordero in the summer but backed out after Malaga demanded €3 million.
They came back to the table in January with a bid of €2 million, but the player’s mind was already made up to go abroad by then.
Malaga attempted to retain him by dishing out one of the highest salaries on offer, but with his contract expiring in June, Cordero opted for a new challenge in England.
For NewcastleUnited, it is a big coup in their strategy to capture the best young talent, while Barcelona will rue missing out on another prodigy.
Cordero’s transfer to St. James’ Park could be a masterstroke as the Magpies continue to build for the future under their visionary ownership.
