Barcelona’s Hansi Flick has set his sights on a Manchester United star to bolster the club’s defense in 2026.

The departure of Inigo Martinez has left Barcelona with a glaring gap in their defensive lineup, particularly the absence of a left-footed centre-back.

With makeshift solutions like left-back Gerard Martin filling the role temporarily, Flick is pushing the club to pursue a high-profile transfer in 2026.

While links to Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni have emerged, the financial demands of such a move have prompted the German tactician to target a more cost-effective option from Manchester United, whose contract situation could favor Barcelona’s negotiations.

The player in Flick’s crosshairs is Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez, a 27-year-old Argentine defender admired for his play-building ability, speed in one-on-one duels, and positional intelligence.

According to Fichajes, Flick sees Martinez as an ideal fit for Barcelona’s backline, offering the versatility and quality needed to compete at the highest level.

With Martinez’s contract running until 2027, the final year of his deal in 2026 could make him a viable target at a reduced cost.

The defender is reportedly open to a move to Spain and donning the iconic Barça shirt, adding intrigue to the potential transfer.

However, Martinez’s injury record poses a significant challenge.

Currently sidelined by a serious cruciate ligament injury until January 2026, the Argentine has missed 57 games for club and country since joining Manchester United in 2022 due to multiple injuries.

Despite these concerns, Barcelona president Joan Laporta views Martinez as a market opportunity, especially compared to the pricier Bastoni.

Flick’s conviction in Martinez’s abilities, combined with the player’s contract situation, could see Barcelona secure a high-caliber defender at a bargain, provided his fitness issues can be managed.

As the 2026 transfer window approaches, Martinez’s potential move could reshape Barcelona’s defense.
