FC Barcelona has opted not to pursue a well-known Inter Milan star, even though there is a €25 million release clause, because they are prioritizing other targets for the 2025-26 season.
The decision reflects part of FC Barcelona’s efforts to improve their attack chances after failing to add Nico Williams when he signed a deal with Athletic Club until 2035.
While FC Barcelona still has financial structures to adhere to, their Sporting Director, Deco, is focused on high-priority signings such as Marcus Rashford and Raphaël Leao to meet La Liga’s Financial Fair Play measures.
Manager Hansi Flick’s plan centers on improving the squad around young players such as Lamine Yamal and is eliminating or circumventing the need for other potential signings.
The player was Denzel Dumfries, who had a solid performance for Inter Milan when he faced Barcelona in the Champions League this season.
Marca reported that Dumfries’ €25 million release clause is active until the 15th of July of 2025 and that he was represented by super-agent Jorge Mendes, creating fertile ground for a potential transfer.
However, Barcelona management determined that Dumfries wasn’t a necessary addition, and the priority is on attacking additions with Jules Kounde and Eric Garcia already in the right-back position.
Barcelona’s choice to pass on Dumfries reflects their disciplined transfer approach, especially after securing Wojciech Szczesny’s extension and navigating uncertainties around Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
While Dumfries’ attacking flair and versatility could have added depth, Flick’s preference for a transformative winger takes precedence.
As the transfer window nears, Barcelona is focused on balancing their wage bill, potentially through sales like Ronald Araujo, to fund their ambitions for La Liga and Champions League success, leaving Dumfries to explore opportunities
