According to Diario Sport, Hansi Flick has been pressuring sporting director Deco to emphasize two key positions: a left-back and a left-winger.
In spite of his attempts to bolster the squad this summer, Hansi Flick feels that the current group still does not have the depth or the quality to compete with the best teams in Europe, especially after last season’s injury-riddled year and his and the team’s disappointment in the Champions League.
Barcelona is still in the process of recovering financially, but Flick’s strategy is focused more on specifically targeted key players to improve specific tactical deficiencies rather than spending huge amounts of money on players while being fiscally responsible.
The reason for the focus on left-back and left-winger in particular comes from Flick’s vision of high-tempo, dynamic, and fluid football, where the left-back is to be able to balance doing his job defensively, and then adding something offensively to complement Barcelona’s possession style of football.
The left-winger needs to add pace to the team, creativity, and a goal-scoring threat to pull apart defenses, stretch defenders, and support Robert Lewandowski.
While no names have been mentioned yet, Flick’s experience at Bayern Munich shows that he looks for players who have both the skillset and the work rate.
These signings are viewed within the club as essential to catch up with rivals like Real Madrid, who have always been better than Barcelona in recent seasons.
Barcelona has added a goalkeeper and some youth signings with depth, but Flick is adamant that they add depth to the roster.
