Girona have secured the signing of a Barcelona midfielder after reaching a comprehensive agreement with the Catalan club.
Having tracked the academy star’s impressive output for Barça Atlètic, Girona structured an advanced proposal to purchase 50 percent of the youngster’s rights for an estimated €1.5 million fee.
However, what appeared to be a smooth cross-Catalan deal hit a sudden pause on the brink of completion, as senior management halted negotiations to evaluate whether the prospect could instead be integrated directly into Spotify Camp Nou’s first-team setup for the upcoming campaign.
The highly rated prospect at the center of the negotiations is 20-year-old La Masia midfielder Brian Fariñas.
According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, manager Hansi Flick directly intervened to delay Fariñas’ move after Frenkie de Jong suffered a serious long-term injury during the World Cup.
Hansi Flick requested that the club keep the young midfielder in the squad for pre-season so he can assess firsthand whether Fariñas has the technical maturity and defensive discipline to cover internal midfield depth.
Rather than walking away or looking elsewhere, Girona have chosen to remain patient, maintaining their financial proposal while FC Barcelona navigate their pre-season preparations.
Barcelona sporting director Deco has held multiple discussions with Fariñas’ agent, Borja García, to map out the best path for his ongoing development.
Brian Fariñas, who signed a contract through 2028 and featured prominently in Barça Atlètic’s starting XI last term, recently started Barcelona’s closed-door friendly against CE Europa.
His immediate future now hinges on the upcoming pre-season training camp in England.
If Hansi Flick decides the academy star is ready to contribute immediately in La Liga, Brian Fariñas will stay at Camp Nou; otherwise, Girona stand ready to finalize his signature.
