European heavyweights are gearing up for a fierce transfer showdown with Barcelona to secure a defensive star in 2026.

FC Barcelona is planning a big move to improve their defense in 2026 by targeting a Premier League player whose contract is nearing its end.

Barcelona already signed some defensive reinforcements like Joan Garcia from Espanyol, but now they are looking to sign a young, experienced center-back under a Bosman contract for a cheap fee.

After recent dealings, it looks like Barcelona wants to focus on free transfers as part of their financial plan, allowing them to remain competitive without a large transfer fee.

That player is Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, who is an English international and is 24 years old, according to Fichajes,

Other clubs have also shown interest in Guehi, including a couple of Premier League clubs like Liverpool and Newcastle, and also Bayern Munich.

Since Guehi’s contract expires in 2026, Barcelona will be able to sign him under Bosman rules period as they will be able to sign him as a free agent.

Guehi is a perfect defender for Barcelona and is known for his strong defending, reading of the game, and ability to play out of the back.

Guehi is a perfect long-term partner for Pau Cubarsi or a replacement for Inigo Martinez.

His Premier League pedigree and international experience make him more appealing; however, Crystal Palace’s high price at the moment is off-putting for summer switches and allows Barcelona to wait longer.

Barcelona may have to bide their time, but competitors are closely watching as Liverpool and Newcastle’s interest grows, with Bayern also scouting Guehi.

If Palace doesn’t expand his contract, Barcelona’s vision of pairing the defender with their future stars may become a reality.

The pursuit of a player to bolster the backline shows Barcelona’s direction of eco-sustainable squad-building, using free agency as a way to sustain competition with Europe’s best.

As 2026 approaches, Guehi’s decision will be important, as it could reform Barcelona’s defense and communicate their intent to take their seat at the top of the throne for recruitment.
