As FC Barcelona prepares to take on RCD Espanyol in the Catalan derby, the focus is largely on a player in La Liga who is emerging as a sought-after player from Europe’s other top clubs.

At just 24 years old, the goalkeeper leads the Spanish top flight in saves with an impressive saves this season, and his display has raised eyebrows of clubs high up in the table with interest.

Reports from AS allegedly state that Barcelona are keeping an eye on him heading into the summer transfer window, especially with their first-choice goalkeeper’s performances and fitness concerning them.

The player in standing is Joan Garcia, Espanyol’s No. 1, whose performances have undoubtedly made him the target of many clubs.

Barcelona’s alleged interest may be sparked by doubts about the form of Marc-André ter Stegen.

It may also be related to ter Stegen’s recovery from a long-term injury, whilst also raising as many questions about how recently ter Stegen has been performing for the club itself.

If other Saudi clubs are interested in ter Stegen, then Barcelona may receive financial improvement if they wish to move him on.

Scheduled to play Barcelona in the derby, Garcia represents a potential long-term replacement given his release clause of €25 million (the clause would be €30 million if Garcia earns a call in the Spain squad for the UEFA Nations League semi-final, or if the transfer negotiations last for the final 15 days of the transfer window).

Espanyol’s financial situation, which reportedly required the sale of a player for €15 million by June 30, might offer an opportunity, but Barcelona isn’t alone in their pursuit.

Reportedly, Arsenal are in front of the line, and they are actively negotiating with Espanyol.

Garcia’s performance against Barcelona will be key, as Hansi Flick’s side determines whether Garcia can target them for years to come.

As the transfer market swiftly approaches, Garcia’s future remains a key talking point.
