Barcelona’s sporting director Deco, has taken a bold step to bolster the club’s defense, meeting with the agent of a Sporting CP star.

Following a string of defensive lapses that have frustrated head coach Hansi Flick, the Blaugrana are actively scouring the market for reinforcements.

Among a shortlist of five centre-backs, one standout candidate has emerged as a priority, with Deco recently holding a meeting with the player’s agent to discuss a potential transfer.

This move signals Barcelona’s intent to bolster their defense ahead of a critical phase in La Liga and the Champions League.

The target in question is Gonçalo Inácio, the highly rated Sporting CP and Portugal international defender.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Inácio’s technical ability and rare profile as a left-footed centre-back make him an ideal fit to partner with Pau Cubarsí, especially after the departure of Iñigo Martínez.

The 24-year-old, represented by AS1 Agency, boasts over 200 appearances for Sporting and 16 caps for Portugal, showcasing both experience and leadership.

Deco’s recent discussions with Inácio’s representatives leverage an existing relationship with the agency, previously involved with Luis Díaz’s transfer, to facilitate negotiations.

However, securing Inácio’s signature poses significant challenges for Barcelona.

His high market value and interest from other top European clubs complicate the deal, while the Catalans’ financial constraints require adherence to La Liga’s 1:1 spending rule.

To fund the transfer, Barcelona may need to offload a key defender, with Ronald Araújo being a potential candidate.

Flick’s stern warnings to his squad underline the urgency to address defensive frailties, and Inácio’s arrival could provide the stability needed to compete on multiple fronts.

As Barcelona prepares for upcoming matches, including a Champions League clash against PSG on October 1, 2025, Deco’s pursuit of Inácio reflects a strategic push to restore the club’s defensive solidity and maintain their competitive edge in a demanding season
