Cesc Fabregas, currently the manager of newly-promoted Serie A side Como, is once more on the hunt for a Barcelona defender that nearly joined his squad in January.
The former midfielder for the Catalan giants already had an ex-captain from Barcelona in the squad by signing Sergio Roberto, and had a deal agreed for around €7 million for the versatile star but Barcelona manager Hansi Flick blocked the move at the time.
Como’s interest is still alive in the player, and Fabregas is looking to strengthen their defence.
The player in question is Eric Garcia, a product of the Barcelona academy and a Spanish international whom Fabregas had some great comments about at a press conference before Como faced Cagliari.
“I am a huge fan of his: he is a versatile player, a leader, important for the team,” Fabregas said about Garcia.
“But what would make me happiest would be if he stayed at Barcelona,” he added, according to Mundo Deportivo.
With his contract running out in 2026, Barcelona are desperate to renew the contract and plan to extend Garcia’s agreement after Hansi Flick declared Garcia a key player for his plans.
Garcia’s versatility to play in multiple defensive roles has been invaluable, especially given the new injuries in the squad.
Fabregas also spoke about his experience seeing the amazing Champions League semifinal between Barcelona and Inter Milan at the Giuseppe Meazza.
Fabregas called the 4-3 extra-time defeat “a beautiful game, one that I will remember,” and as he noted, “I almost left when Raphinha scored late on, only to come back just in time to see a dramatic ending in extra-time.”
His attendance at the match reinforced his special connection with Barcelona, despite his move to Como, and for the time being, Garcia plays a key role in Flick’s project, and Barcelona are keen to fend off any offers to get the player to make a long-term commitment to the club.
