Chelsea is plotting a bold January swoop for 2 Barcelona defenders, aiming to bolster their backline with proven La Liga talent.

After missing out on midfield targets from FC Barcelona during the summer, the London club has shifted focus to the Blaugrana’s backline, eyeing two versatile center-backs who could provide stability and depth.

With Barcelona leading La Liga under Hansi Flick, Chelsea’s interest adds intrigue to the January window, potentially sparking a transfer tug-of-war amid the Catalans’ financial recovery.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Chelsea is monitoring Eric Garcia and Ronald Araujo closely.

Garcia, whose contract expires at season’s end, is in renewal talks with Barcelona, but Chelsea could negotiate a pre-contract from January 2026 or push for a January deal.

The 24-year-old Spaniard, a key under Flick with his composure and passing—27 appearances this season—fits Maresca’s ball-playing mold.

Graeme Bailey, TBR’s chief correspondent, noted, “Eric Garcia is someone Chelsea would want in January, but he’ll most likely have signed a new contract by then.”

Araujo, the 26-year-old Uruguayan, presents a tougher challenge. Signed to a long-term deal in January 2025, he’s committed to Barcelona despite injury setbacks, often preferred over Garcia in big games.

Chelsea’s theoretical interest—per Bailey—hinges on Araujo signaling a desire to leave, which he hasn’t.

“They’re not convinced he wants to leave Barcelona just yet,” Bailey added.

Araujo’s physicality and leadership—150+ appearances—would anchor Chelsea’s defense, but Barcelona views him as indispensable.

Barcelona’s resolve, bolstered by Flick’s system, makes a January raid unlikely, but Chelsea’s persistence reflects their strategy of poaching from rivals.

Garcia’s versatility—capable at center-back or full-back—appeals amid Chelsea’s injury crisis, while Araujo’s €1bn clause deters short-term bids.

As El Clasico looms on October 26, Barcelona’s duo remains crucial, but Chelsea’s scouting could pay off if contracts falter.

For the Blaugrana, retaining them is vital to their 25-point lead; for Chelsea, it’s a chance to disrupt La Liga’s giants.
