The striker search is already heating up in Catalonia, but one name continues to dominate the agenda as Barcelona plan for a new era up front.

There is a growing expectation that a new centre-forward will arrive this summer, with Julian Alvarez firmly positioned as the club’s primary target, although the road to securing his signature looks anything but straightforward.

The Argentine forward, currently starring for Atletico Madrid, is viewed internally as the ideal long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski, with his relentless work rate, finishing ability and tactical intelligence fitting perfectly into Hansi Flick’s vision.

However, Atletico’s firm stance and the financial demands involved have forced Barcelona to begin exploring alternative options.

According to Cadena SER, one of the standout contingency plans is Joao Pedro, who has impressed during his debut campaign with Chelsea.

Joao Pedro, who arrived in London for a fee exceeding £51 million last summer, has delivered solid numbers despite his team’s inconsistent season, registering 19 goals and nine assists across all competitions.

Within Barcelona’s recruitment team, there is a belief that João Pedro represents a more financially attainable option compared to Alvarez, while still offering versatility across the front line, creativity in tight spaces and a sharp eye for goal.

His profile is seen as one that could adapt quickly to Flick’s attacking system, making him a serious fallback should negotiations for Alvarez stall.

That said, he is not the only alternative being monitored.

Barcelona continue to keep tabs on Lautaro Martinez, who remains a long-standing admiration within the club’s hierarchy after several strong seasons with Inter Milan.

The Argentine captain has once again delivered impressive numbers this season, contributing 20 goals and four assists, but his long-term deal running until 2029 makes any potential move both complicated and expensive.

As things stand, Alvarez remains the clear priority, but Barcelona are carefully mapping out multiple scenarios to avoid being caught off guard in what is expected to be a decisive summer window.

With finances tight and expectations high, every move in the striker market will need to be calculated, strategic, and ultimately transformative.
