Barcelona have had plenty of transfer targets slip through their fingers over the years, with financial limitations and timing often playing a decisive role in the club’s recruitment plans.
One player who could have taken a very different career path is Bryan Zaragoza, who is currently gaining experience on loan across Catalonia.
The Spanish winger first made a name for himself at Granada, where his direct style and ability to take on defenders quickly attracted attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
His performances eventually earned him international recognition with Spain, while Bayern Munich moved early to secure his services.
Barcelona were also monitoring his situation during that period as the club assessed attacking options capable of adding pace and unpredictability to the squad.
The Catalan giants would later encounter Zaragoza’s name again when they explored alternatives on the wing during another transfer window.
Bryan Zaragoza has now confirmed that Barcelona were genuinely in contact over a potential move to Camp Nou, revealing that a deal was discussed before he ultimately joined Bayern Munich.
The 25-year-old made the admission while speaking to Cadena SER’s Que t’hi Jugues, on X, putting an end to some of the speculation surrounding how close he came to becoming a Barcelona player.
There was more than simply media interest, with Zaragoza confirming that there were actual contacts between his camp and the Catalan club.
Ultimately, Barcelona did not complete the transfer and Bayern won the race for the winger in the 2024 winter window.
The move to Germany represented a major step in Zaragoza’s career after his breakthrough at Granada, although his time with Bayern has not developed into a permanent place in the first-team picture.
That has now led to another interesting chapter for the winger.
Zaragoza is currently spending the season on loan at Espanyol, meaning he is playing his football in Barcelona despite never completing the move to the club that previously wanted him.
His situation also shows how quickly transfer plans can change at Barcelona.
The Catalan side were again linked with Zaragoza during the summer when they were looking at alternatives to Athletic Club forward Nico Williams, but another move to Camp Nou failed to materialise.
Instead, Zaragoza ended up joining Barcelona’s city rivals on a temporary deal.
For Barcelona, Zaragoza ultimately became one of those players who came close to entering the club’s orbit without ever making it through the door.
And with the winger now playing for Espanyol, the story has taken an even more unusual turn: Zaragoza is finally based in Barcelona, just not wearing the famous Blaugrana colours.
