Barcelona is already mapping out its summer transfer strategy, and one of the objectives is to reinforce the full-back department.
The technical staff and coach are reportedly on the same page when it comes to finding a player who can play on both sides of the pitch—a profile which would be similar to that of former loanee João Cancelo.
The ideal player would be capable of bringing agility, professionalism, and tactical flexibility, which Cancelo had brought during his stint at Camp Nou.
Signing such a player, however, won’t be a walk in the park since financial limitations are still an obstacle.
Barcelona’s ability to follow through on any move will depend on their ability to create wage space, which is still a thorn in their transfer strategy.
Manager Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco are particularly keen on versatility, as a two-way full-back would provide greater flexibility in Flick’s system, where wide defenders are so crucial.
That being said, Barcelona is also considering younger, less-established players who have the potential to grow into the role.
According to Diario Sport, several names have been touted as possible targets, with AS Monaco’s Vanderson, an old Deco favourite from his time at Grêmio, included.
Another name is Almería’s Marc Pubill, who was close to joining Barcelona last summer, with Feyenoord’s Givairo Read also being included as a long-term target.
Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong, who has impressed Flick with his explosive Bundesliga performances, is another more experienced option.
All of them possess a different set of qualities, but what runs through them all is Barcelona’s need for a dynamic full-back who can make an impact in the side.
As the summer window approaches, Barcelona’s quest for the perfect defensive signing continues to bubble away, if only with much difficulty.
The economic limitations of the club and the very specific needs of their playing style make it a complicated business.
But with Flick and Deco leading the charge, the Catalans are determined to get it done—whether in a tried-and-tested star or a young up-and-comer waiting to shine.
