Barcelona has made early approaches to Tottenham’s midfielders’ agents, paving the way for a summer transfer battle.
He has been Tottenham’s preferred choice since he arrived from Juventus in 2022, and his maturity, his graft, and his flexibility to play anywhere in midfield make him special.
The player has 12 months remaining on his existing deal, and Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has begun talks to extend his contract, but Barça’s interest could muddle the waters.
According to The Boy Hotspur, the player is Rodrigo Bentancur.
The reports say that the Catalan giants have initiated early negotiations with the star’s agents and another European powerhouse—at this stage named Atlético Madrid—because they want to snap up the 27-year-old’s services on a transfer.
Ex-Spurs ‘keeper Paul Robinson described him once as “sensational” and was taken by how quickly he adapted to the Premier League.
“He’s one of the first names on the teamsheet,” Robinson told Football Insider..
“His all-round performance is excellent—he provides defensive solidity and attacking threat.
” Injury has stopped him from performing at his best, but Bentancur is not one to be substituted in a comparatively young Spurs squad, and his absence would be a devastating loss.
Tottenham hasn’t put an official valuation on him, but they were reportedly in the £50 million region for him previously.
Tottenham Hotspur is interested in signing Eric Garcia, so perhaps Barcelona can exchange him for Bentancur
Barcelona’s finances would encourage them to attempt to sign him for less money or installment payments, especially with the situation regarding Bentancur’s contract.
The coming weeks will be determinative of Bentancur’s future.
Will the Spurs secure his long-term allegiance, or will Barcelona’s charm campaign prevail in convincing him to move to La Liga?
One thing is certain: his next step could define the next phase of his career—and remake two clubs’ midfield plans.
