FC Barcelona is preparing to enhance its roster in the next summer transfer window, with the primary target being the right-back spot.
The manager, Hansi Flick, while happy with Jules Kounde’s performances as the first-choice right back, was less than limpid on Hector Fort being good enough as a second-choice right back.
Therefore, the Blaugrana are looking for an explosive, young defender who can be developed to fit with Kounde and their tactics.
Affordability is less relevant to Barcelona, of course, with Financial Fair Play a factor.
They will be looking for young defenders who can be great.
One option is a 21-year-old Spaniard from a lower division club, who had good performances.
This and the collective’s interests developed the interest from the Catalan giants.
The player in our focus is UD Almeria fullback Marc Pubill, a multifaceted right-back who has made a presence on Barcelona’s shortlist, as reported by Fichajes.
Pubill developed in Levante’s youth system, made his way to Almeria in 2023, and excelled with his combination of attacking instincts, physical traits, and tactical discipline.
Despite Almeria dropping to La Liga 2 last season, the Olympic Gold Medal winner was a standout with one goal and five assists in his thirty-six appearances across all competitions.
Pubill was in great form to start the 2nd division season, which has only highlighted him further on the limited right-back market.
Barcelona scouted Pubill last summer, but were unable to act on him as a potential target because of their financial difficulties.
Now that interest has been re-ignited, the club views him as a cheap yet sporting signing.
There is a firm belief amongst those close to the player that he would be keen to join the Camp Nou.
Although Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong remains another option, Pubill is a domestic professional option at a young age, with La Liga experience, and is also much more affordable.
Although a formal offer has not been lodged, Barca’s intention to sign Pubill indicates their re-commitment to rebuilding the talent pool at right-back for a sustainable future.
