Barcelona is actively planning for life after Ronald Araujo, targeting three promising defenders to bolster their backline.
Barcelona is preparing for a possible defensive overhaul this summer, with Ronald Araujo’s future at the club looking less clear than ever.
Ronald Araujo was traditionally a key figure in the Blaugrana defence.
In recent times, his performances have been inconsistent at best; therefore, Barca sporting director Deco has already started compiling a three-man shortlist of possible replacements, according to Fichajes.
The shortlist includes Marc Guehi, Cristhian Mosquera, and Antonio Silva, which suggests that Barcelona wants to pick a player who can make an immediate contribution, as well as a longer-term commitment.
Marc Guehi is the main figure on the list. Guehi has emerged as Crystal Palace’s best defender at just age 26 and, since coming to the Premier League, has shown consistency, calmness, and leadership.
With Guehi’s contract entering its final year, he could be signable at a reasonable price, which is attractive for Barcelona given their current financial stance.
Additionally, the club has noted that Guehi is open to a new challenge, likely a motivating factor, too.
Cristhian Mosquera, a 20-year-old star from Valencia, is a daring, young investment. Mosquera’s maturity and ability to play as a right-back attract Deco’s attention.
His contract is similar to Guehi’s, and Barcelona could also pick up a bargain for a player with long-term potential as a central defender.
The trio is made complete by Antonio Silva, who plays for Benfica and is a rich 21-year-old prospect. Despite Silva’s unrefuted talent, Benfica’s contract till 2027 means an immediate transfer will require substantial compensation.
Therefore, Deco may decide to hold off any action until 2026 to negotiate a lower price, aligning with Barcelona’s tactics.
As Araujo’s release clause of €65 million approaches, Barcelona are proactively moving to protect themselves in the event of his departure.
Whether it is Guehi’s experience, Mosquera’s potential, or Silva’s ability, the club is determined to bolster their defense and get a like-for-like replacement.
