Barcelona has already started preparing for next season, which means several players are waiting on uncertain futures.
One defender’s name has always appeared consistently when discussions of who could leave arise – a player whose injury issues and loss of form have seen him drop in the pecking order.
Many presumed that an exit this summer was lin east a possibility and the practical thing to do for both the player and the club.
Younger players are approaching. There is depth in front of him at the position they all play.
And with a cluster of injuries behind him this season, opportunities to help the team will be lost.
Barcelona is always watching its numbers, and it would certainly help the team to free up salary.
But with a twist that few would have predicted, the player has insisted he is not leaving. He wants to stay and challenge for his spot, according to Diario Sport.
That player is Andreas Christensen. According to reports, Christensen, a Dane with the contract until 2026, has dismissed the idea of being sent away this summer.
Although his season has been untidy because of injuries, knowledge, and inconsistency level during this season, Christensen wants to stay and contribute, and has rejected the option of just walking away.
It has surprised many, especially given the competition on defense.
Under Hansi Flick, Pau Cubarsí’s meteoric rise, Iñigo Martínez’s constant, Ronald Araújo’s consistent presence, and even Eric Garcia’s flexibility saw Christensen pushed aside.
But instead of looking for a new beginning somewhere else, he is digging in.
There have been no discussions of a contract extension, and it is feasible that those at the top of Barcelona would like to move him on, but Christensen’s determination complicates the club’s plans for the summer.
The club will likely discuss his future after the season’s conclusion, but Christensen’s willingness to remain means it won’t be an easy decision for them to make.
