Bayer Leverkusen’s reliable defender has become one of the Bundesliga’s most dependable stoppers, combining impressive ball-play with strength in duel situations.
A central player in Leverkusen’s recent success story, he has also earned regular German national team selection, demonstrating leadership and consistency on the international scene.
His contract runs out in 2025, and with the 28-year-old drawing interest from top European clubs—primarily Barcelona, where manager Hansi Flick views him as a great defensive signing.
As reported by Diario Sport, Barcelona has told German center-back Jonathan Tah that they want to sign him this summer despite financial concerns.
The 28-year-old Bayer Leverkusen starlet is out of contract at the end of the season and has attracted interest from giants Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, and AC Milan.
But Jonathan Tah would prefer to move to Barcelona, and the Catalan club has now confirmed that they still have intentions.
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has allegedly identified him as one of the priority targets to bolster the defense.
The club has made Tah’s agent, Pini Zahavi, aware that they will be in a position to register new players in July and can guarantee him playing time.
Flick feels that Tah’s physicality, tactical sense, and defensive organizing ability make him an ideal signing for the team.
But Barcelona’s budget means they will have to sell players first.
The club has five center-backs now: Pau Cubarsí, Iñigo Martínez, Ronald Araújo, Eric García, and Andreas Christensen.
Cubarsí, Martínez, and Araújo recently signed contract extensions, and García is set to stay as well.
That would mean that Christensen, who has been injury-plagued, would have to be sold to make room for Jonathan Tah.
Tah has declined larger offers from other clubs as he desires to join Barcelona.
However, he is waiting for a definite confirmation from the club to make up his mind.
Barcelona has now made it evident that they do want to sign him, but they first need to straighten their finances.
If the transfer happens, Tah would be a shrewd signing for Barcelona—a reliable, experienced defender coming in on a free.
Fans will be keen to hear if the club can pull it off.
